FAQs

🐾 Are Dobermanns good with children and families?

Yes — with proper training and socialisation.
Dobermanns are loyal, affectionate, and highly bonded to their families. When raised with consistent structure, exposure, and respectful interactions, they can be excellent companions for children. As with any breed, supervision is key, especially with young kids, and both the dog and the children should be taught how to interact respectfully with each other.

🐾 Are Dobermanns good with other dogs?

They can be, with early socialisation and responsible management.
Dobermanns are naturally protective and can be selective with other dogs, particularly of the same sex. Early, positive socialisation and clear leadership from their owners go a long way. We recommend structured introductions, ongoing training, and respecting each dog’s individual temperament.

🐾 Do Dobermanns need a lot of exercise?

Yes. Dobermanns are a high-energy working breed that thrives on mental and physical stimulation. Daily walks, training sessions, and structured play are essential. Without proper outlets, they can become bored or anxious — and that can lead to unwanted behaviours. A tired Dobermann is a happy Dobermann.

🐾 Do Dobermanns shed?

Yes, but minimally.
Dobermanns have short, single coats and are considered low to moderate shedders. They shed year-round, but a weekly groom with a rubber brush helps keep loose hair under control and maintains a healthy coat.

🐾 Are Dobermanns aggressive?

Not when bred, raised, and trained correctly.
Dobermanns are confident and protective by nature, but they are not inherently aggressive. They need strong, fair leadership and clear expectations. A well-bred and properly raised Dobermann should have solid nerves, clear-headed drive, and the ability to discern real threats from everyday life.

🐾 Do Dobermanns make good first-time dogs?

It depends. Dobermanns are intelligent and eager to work, but they’re not a “set-and-forget” breed. They require consistency, leadership, and time invested into their training and relationship. If you’re a first-time owner who’s willing to learn and put in the effort, you’ll be rewarded with an incredible companion.

🐾 Do Dobermanns need training?

Absolutely. Training isn’t optional with Dobermanns — it’s essential. Basic obedience, impulse control, and engagement training should begin early and continue throughout their life. These dogs thrive on clear communication and love having a job to do.

🐾 Should I crate train my Dobermann?

Yes. Crate training is a safe and effective way to teach boundaries, assist with toilet training, and provide your dog with a calm, secure place to rest. It also prepares your Dobermann for travel, vet visits, and emergency situations.

🐾 Can Dobermanns live in apartments?

Yes — with enough mental and physical enrichment.
While Dobermanns appreciate space, what matters most is daily exercise, stimulation, and interaction. Apartment living can work if their needs are met, but they do best with an owner who is present and engaged.

🐾 Are Dobermanns indoor or outdoor dogs?

Indoor — with outdoor access.
Dobermanns are highly bonded to their people and don’t tolerate being left outside or isolated. They have short coats and minimal fat, which means they feel the cold and heat more than some other breeds. They are happiest when living as part of the family inside the home.
